In our present era, there are many discourses related to mental health which have created a helpful path for many victims. While mental health is still a stigma in several places, these talks and campaigns promoting betterment are increasing every day and many people are realizing the need to work for their emotional well-being. Poverty, unsupportive households, stigma and hegemonic attitude, and lack of education are some of the obstacles that are most talked about these days. However, there are certain factors that are so inherent to the sufferers themselves, which we fail to recognize as barriers to their wellbeing. Here are some causes which can make a patient view their depression as comfort and not seek treatment:
For a person who lives in a constant dark fold of depression, hope is like a ray of light that helps them to go through each day. However, every time a person struggling emotionally has been let down of their hopes, the dark fold intensifies itself and the person no longer has faith. They would rather stick to their pain than get hurt by seeking something different. In such a situation, it is the right person, right words, and right treatments that can act as a shield and motivate them to take one step towards betterment.
After remaining untreated for a very long time, many victims can adapt to a dark lifestyle filled with unhealthy habits. This is often misunderstood as them being reckless, but in reality, it is just their way to fight back with their minds. Because no treatment or aid is supplied to them when they need it the most, they make themselves numb to their sufferings. Even though this numbness has helped them to survive without treatment, it has also made them less motivated to choose the healthy path.
At one point of this endless suffering of untreated depression, all a person knows to define life is anguish. And the idea of stability or peace appears as alien concepts that scare them. Here they apply the rule of anti-hope again, why risk losing the “normal” painful situation which is common to them, for something unknown like happiness?
All the above-mentioned reasons can lead up to one thing — internal exhaustion. Without anyone’s help, fighting a battle as gruesome as depression can render a person too tired to create any change. Also, their misconstrued worldview also stops them from taking a healthy step for themselves.
To conclude, this article talks about a very sensitive area of depression that is externally personal to the patient. And that is why it is even scarier for them as there is no way anyone from the outside can figure it out. However, it is important that we talk about such invisible matters too, as they are created for two major absences: lack of communication and lack of awareness. Hence, while the article gives you a general picture of a depressive state, it’s important that we identify when our loved ones are unknowingly choosing depression as their comfort zone.
