When was the last time you had your dinner without your gadgets around you? Or else if I ask you how many stairs it takes to reach your flat? Or How many billboards do you pass every day while reaching your workplace? Can you answer three of these properly? If it is a YES, you already know this topic this article is covering. But if you can not answer, this article is going to be an impactful reading for you. Mindfulness can help you in this case.
What is Mindfulness?
If I say in a very simple manner Mindfulness means “Being totally present at a moment”. Like when you are reading this article, how many times something irrelevant popped up in your mind? It may be related to your study, or your job, or assignment, or the recipe you just had on the stove, or the post you just posted on Instagram. To manage this kind of irrelevant thought roaming, mindfulness is highly useful.
Why is Mindfulness required?
Anything we apply in our life we should always know why we are doing this. There is no exception here also. Here are five reasons why you should apply mindfulness in your life immediately.
- Relaxes body and mind.
- Improves attention power.
- Sharpens memory.
- Helps to manage anxiety and stress.
- Helps to sleep better which indirectly keeps healthy.
How can you apply Mindfulness in your Life?
We can apply mindfulness in various activities of life like eating, walking, observing, reading, and even breathing. Here is some detailed information on how mindfulness is applied in our daily tasks.
Eating is an activity in our life we do every day but hardly pay attention to. While eating, if we want to apply mindfulness we can ask a few things to ourselves like “what we eat” and “why we eat”. We need to smell and touch the food properly while eating rather than focusing on our gadgets. “Why we eat” basically answers how much food we should take in. It also inspires us to chew our food properly rather than just gulping. This consciousness is already contributing to our diet.
20-30 minutes walking is always considered a good exercise for the
human body. But if we can apply mindfulness in this, its value increases automatically. Mindfulness walking means watching our steps while walking and taking notes of every detail in our walking path.
We as intelligent beings always read something in our daily life. “What are we reading?” We should ask ourselves this question. We should care about
the letters, fonts, and most importantly pay attention to what we are reading about.
To practice mindful observing we can take any object living or non-living near us. If it has a smell we should take it in. We should touch it with our hands and should observe whether it is sharp or dumb. We should watch its color and texture if it has any and also we should observe its size and what it contains and detail about it. Another tip for mindful observing is, When we are done with observation we should recall what we were observing.
Mindful breathing is a strong technique that an individual can practice at any time. Mindful breathing means holding attention to our breathing for a
certain period. We can observe how we take air in and periodically leave it outside. If we can just observe our breathing cycle for 2 or 3 minutes (or more). We can moderate it also. Like we can take air inside, hold our breath and slowly leave the air outside. It instantly relaxes us and detaches us from everything around us.
