Couple of days ago, One Direction celebrated its 10 years! It made me really think of the time and reason why I became a fan of them and their music! I started listening to their music in 2015, just when they were about to announce their break. Before that, I was extremely unaware of this British Boy Band who legit had the effect on young girls’ hearts like Backstreet Boys used to have in mine! Did I just reveal my age? Lol, maybe I did!
So, how did I start listening to and following their music? In 2015, I was a home tutor for a seventh-grade student who was a massive fan of this band. But as she was not doing well in her studies, she was not allowed to sit on the Internet that much. So, she used to share her celebrity crushes, likes, and dislikes with me. I could see the seventh grade me in her and I used to really enjoy seeing her get excited!
Anyway, we made a deal that I would bring her the latest news on One Direction, and she will complete her home-works and studies for me. It went on quite well for some time but then I stopped being her tutor. I stopped cause I had to focus on my studies and teaching her was very time consuming and exhausting as well. Though my following up on One Direction, its music, its band members, its updates didn’t stop.
I legit started getting in that zone when I used to take updates about the band and its members regularly! Now when I think of the band and its music helped me get out of so many complicated and awkward feelings, emotions, and situations! I have spent hours and hours, nights and nights reading about their inspirations behind their lyrics, their melodies, their inspirations, and their own music style. And I feel, whatever little creativity I have in myself now, related to writing or speaking, has come to me because I have given my attention and energy to five creative people who started when they were of my age.
I know boy bands are most of the time taken very lightly, but imagine, you are seeing a band where all the members are of your age, and have gone through similar yet very different experiences in life and still managed to become successful because of utilizing their musical talent. This means something you know! I certainly do not take it lightly. I love their music. I love their individuality in terms of their vocal ranges, their choices of genres, melodies, tunes, and lyrics.
They made me realize that I can dream. Sounds cliché? Thanks, I don’t care if it does. Their interviews, humble backgrounds, view in life and their way of just communicating made me realize that as long as you love what you do and as long as you are humble, polite, and wanting to learn every day, you can dare to dream about doing anything and everything in life.
“Drag me Down” has uplifted me and my soul at a time when there was nothing in my life which should make me feel uplifted, but that particular song did make me feel supremely uplifted. “History” reminds me of all the wonderful memories that I have made over the years with my best friends. “Infinity” is one such song that breaks my heart and creates an emptiness inside every time I listen to it. There is an extremely high packed song “Where do broken hearts go” in one of their albums which will really make you think and feel about every heart breaks you ever had!
I was thinking for a while now about pouring my heart out about this band because they gave me positivity, happiness, sense of creativity and inspiration to dream when nobody and nothing else did. I really do hope, one day, I will be able to interview them for Pensive Stories to talk about heir mental health, mental strength, stability and how they do what they do! Sounds over ambitious? Well don’t blame me, blame them! They taught me to dream!
